Concrete Driveway Cracks: What Causes Them and When to Act

Every concrete driveway will develop some form of cracking over its lifetime. Most cracks are cosmetic and completely normal. A few are signs of something more serious. This guide walks through the main types of cracks you might see on a Tweed Heads driveway and explains which ones need attention.

Shrinkage cracks — the most common type

Concrete shrinks slightly as it cures. In the first few weeks after a pour, that shrinkage happens whether or not the driveway is being driven on. When it happens, the concrete relieves the stress by developing very thin surface cracks — usually less than 2mm wide, often only visible in specific lighting.

Shrinkage cracks are cosmetic and almost always harmless. They don’t indicate that anything is wrong with the concrete driveway or that structural failure is imminent. A well-installed driveway includes control joints — deliberate cuts made across the slab — that are designed to concentrate this shrinkage into predictable locations rather than random surface cracks. Settlement cracks — worth investigating

Settlement cracks appear when the subbase underneath the driveway shifts or compacts unevenly. Instead of the fine surface pattern of shrinkage cracks, settlement cracks tend to be:

  • Wider than 2mm
  • Run diagonally across the slab
  • Sometimes accompanied by a visible height difference on either side of the crack
  • Concentrated in specific areas rather than distributed evenly

Settlement cracks are often caused by poor subbase preparation during the original pour, unusual ground movement after heavy rain, or landscaping work that undermined the driveway edge. The crack itself is usually not dangerous, but the underlying cause needs assessing — if the settlement is ongoing, cosmetic repair alone won’t stop the crack from getting worse.

Structural cracks — act sooner rather than later

Structural cracks are the ones to take seriously. Signs of a structural problem:

  • Cracks wider than 5mm
  • Cracks that run right across the slab from edge to edge
  • Cracks with height differences you can feel underfoot
  • Cracks that appeared suddenly after a heavy vehicle load or an earthworks event

Structural cracking usually points to a problem with the original reinforcement, the mix specification, or the load-bearing capacity of the slab. This is where a professional assessment matters — some structural cracks can be repaired and stabilised; others indicate that the slab has reached the end of its useful life and needs replacement.

Edge and corner cracking

The edges and corners of a driveway are the most vulnerable parts of the slab. Edge cracks and corner spalling can appear when:

  • Vehicles regularly drive over an unsupported edge
  • The edge detail wasn’t formed properly during the pour
  • Landscaping or excavation near the edge has removed the support underneath
  • Heavy delivery trucks have taken the same edge repeatedly

Edge damage is often more cosmetic than structural, but it looks untidy and it can spread if left alone. Repair is straightforward when caught early; harder and more expensive when a chunk of edge has broken away entirely.

Rust staining around cracks

If you see brown or orange staining bleeding out of a crack, that’s a sign that moisture has reached the reinforcement mesh or rebar inside the slab and started to corrode it. This matters — as the steel rusts, it expands, which forces more cracking and eventually causes the concrete around it to spall away. Rust staining around a crack is a strong signal that the crack needs sealing quickly to keep water out.

When to act

For a rough rule of thumb:

  • Hairline surface cracks: monitor. No action needed unless they widen.
  • Cracks 2–5mm: worth sealing to keep water out. Not urgent.
  • Cracks over 5mm, or with height changes, or with rust staining: get a professional look at it.
  • Sudden new cracks after a heavy vehicle or earthworks event: worth an inspection.

Will filling a crack stop it from spreading?

Sealing a crack keeps water out, which prevents freeze-thaw damage and reinforcement corrosion. But if the underlying cause (settlement, structural failure) is still active, sealing alone won’t stop the crack from growing.
